Artist's Statement

Julia and Herb
As an artist, painting with soft pastels has been my greatest joy! They flow like paint, forgive like erasable media and stay like stone. Pastels pure pigments are said to last for hundreds of years. An artist friend suggested I begin using them explaining they would be an excellent transition to oil painting. I have yet to cross the bridge to oil and continue to enjoy soft pastel!
Soft pastels are fast, flashy and colorful, much like wildlife. With this medium, I am able to capture the softness and serenity of nature, hinting at an animal’s many faceted personalities- their secretiveness, apparent insatiability and vulnerability–all purpose and repose.
I find great inspiration and beauty in the natural world. However, my humanness has always kept me feeling somewhat separated from it. So with my pastels in my pack, I hike to an imagined, buzzing meadow where I spend the afternoon, nose to nose with a browsing bear or fleeting fox. I stay as long as I like, and they don’t seem to mind.
